Babies born last week can look forward to an extra birthday present - free nappies.
East Sussex County Council is offering starter packs of washable nappies to all babies born during Real Nappy Week which ran from March 11 to 18.
The event, which was in its 11th year, was held to encourage families to save hundreds of pounds and reduce their weekly rubbish by using washable nappies.
Matthew Lock, lead member for transport and environment, joined the county council's Rethink Rubbish bus which stopped in Hastings town centre to promote washable nappies and to answer general questions on how to reduce household waste.
He said: "Babies need about 20 washable nappies from birth to potty, compared to 3,800 disposable nappies in the same period. So, by switching to washables, parents can substantially reduce the amount of waste produced by their household as well as save money."
People whose babies were born last week can claim their Nappy Birthday packs from Lisa Mooney in the council's waste management team by emailing lisa.mooney@eastsussex.gov.uk or calling 01273 482912.
