Bad Film Club: Simon Munnery Vs Die Hard II

From the The Argus, first published Friday 15th Dec 2006.

Comdedian Simon Munnery will unleash a torrent of derision at a "bad film", following in the footsteps of Stuart Lee's attack on March of the Penguins in October.

In the firing line this time is Die Hard II, the allaction sequel in which officer John McClane returns to save the world from terrorists.

Best known for his role as Alan Parker:rban Warrior and The League Against Tedium, as well as for his giant hats and eccentric sartorial appearance, Munnery will be dismantling the film as part of the popular Bad Film Club brainchild of movie-buffs Nicko and Joe.

Believing there is "nothing better than watching a bad film with friends," the duo conceived the idea of a comedian hosting a night of cack celluloid and cutting comedy.

Audiences are encouraged to heckle, shout abuse and throw popcorn.

It's not difficult to conceive why Bruce Willis' panned second film in the Die Hard trilogy is to be the subject of Munnery's barbed cynicism.

Numerous pitfalls, most notably the film's climactic scene in which a plane is blown-up using a lighter (impossible) and scenes of a character talking on a phone held upside down, lead critics to claim the plot has "holes in it so large you could fly a 747 through them".

Munnery, who rose to fame working with the likes of Lee and Steve Coogan at the Edinburgh Festival in The Dum Show, will no doubt relish the opportunity.
