From the The Argus, first published Friday 15th Dec 2006.
Long awaited improvements to a high street have been unveiled.
Visitors to Billingshust high street will enjoy a more pedestrian-friendly area, with wider footways, new street furniture and street lighting.
The work was undertaken as part of a £400,000 project which was started in June.
Decorative paving, seating, a bus shelter and bollards have also been installed.
Horsham District Councillor David Jenkins said: "The enhancements are the final phase of traffic calming in the village that have followed the opening of the Billingshurst bypass in 1999. "
Tex Pemberton, West Sussex County Council's cabinet member for highways and transport, said: "I am delighted that this work has been completed before Christmas."
He added: "I am sure that the new pedestrian-friendly environment will benefit not only residents and visitors but the general economy of the town."
The work was undertaken by Horsham District Council and West Sussex County Council and was paid for by the developers.
