Letter: We need all the help we can get

From the archive, first published Wednesday 27th Jul 2005.

I would like to express our thanks to all those who attended the quiz night at Westham village hall last Thursday, which raised £208 for East Sussex Wildlife Rescue.

I would also like to thank everyone who attended the annual Companion Dog Show at Five Ashes Recreation Ground on July 17, raising funds for us.

We have been extremely busy this year and have dealt with more than 400 more incidents than this time last year. As a result our funds are very low.

At the weekend we dealt with a road casualty deer at Handcross as we could not find anyone more local able to deal with the poor creature without just shooting it.

The call-out came in at 12.30am as I was going to bed and I did not return home until after 7am. This is one of many night time calls we have received recently.

For the first time in years I had to send all calls to our answerphone as it would have been too dangerous for me to drive.

I would like to apologise to those of you who we were not able to help over the weekend and on Monday.

I always feel guilty for switching the phone off when I get so run down.

I am trying to take on new volunteers but we can only take on one person at a time.

It is hard trying to organise the fundraising, undertake admin, organise new facilities and manage rescues at the same time.

If you can make a donation or who would be interested in helping to organise fundraising events, please email me at trevor@iar.org.uk. Donations can also be sent to our treasurer at Ash Cottage, 73 Friday Street, Eastbourne, BN23 8AY.

-Trevor Weeks, East Sussex Wildlife Rescue, Hailsham
