Buses are destroying our homes

Neighbours in a conservation area fear their homes are being shaken to bits by the rumble of dozens of buses. The 19th Century houses were featured in the 1947 film Brighton Rock but the owners fear their properties are now on shaky ground. Cracks have begun appearing in the walls since 22 buses an hour started using the narrow street in the Westhill Conservation area. In a typical half hour, 200 cars and 42 vans and lorries also squeeze up and down Upper Gloucester Road. Householders in the street, where the terraced properties reach prices of £240,000, have estimated 300 buses a day use the road as a cut-through between Queens Road and Dyke Road. Ten years ago only one bus used the road, the number seven minibus. But two years ago roadworks in Buckingham Road forced drivers along Upper Gloucester Road and it has become part of the route ever since. Now the 7, 10A, 80A, 14, 14C, 47, 37, and even `sorry not in service' buses are regular visitors. But r4esidents say the road is too narrow and buses are being forced up on to the pavement which have caused the kerbs to sink. Roger French, managing director of Brighton and Hove Bus and Coach Company said: "Upper Gloucester Road is a key link between Brighton station and Churchill Square at the bottom end of Dyke Road and has been for more than 20 years. "It is not an ideal route but it is a key one. "We've been there for many, many years and I can't see any alternative. "There's nothing we can do about it."  more...
